Canada Geese Managment Plan
It’s the end of summer, so geese should be migrating, right? But geese have become a year-round problem, with many Canada geese staying through the winter months. On top of this problem, you will also encounter large flocks of geese migrating through the area. So just when you think you have the goose problem under control, you find 100 geese camped out on your property. These large flocks will travel long distances and stop for breaks together. Which means hundreds of geese eating, loafing and causing a lot of droppings in one area. Ohio Geese Control help you set up a geese management program.
A nuisance geese management plan is a multi-faceted approach. And using more than one of these techniques will increase your success rate.
Step 1: Minimize the food source
- Stop feeding the geese. Eliminate bird feeders and use signage to encourage visitors on your property to not feed the geese.
- Habitat modification. Allow the grass to grow taller around the pond and where geese congregate. Geese love manicured lawns, so making them naturalized areas will help deter the geese.
- Chemical sprays. There are some chemicals that can be sprayed on the lawn to deter the geese. These environmentally safe chemicals will give the goose an upset stomach, so they will not want to come back to that area.
Step 2: Instill the fear of a predator on site
- Harassment with border collies. This is a proven method that is highly effective to get rid of geese. The border collie’s wolf-like glare and chase will provide a safe way to imprint the fear of a coyote on site.
- Harassment with Laser Pointers. Laser pointers are not known to geese, and the beam will frighten them, especially in lower levels of light.
- Harassment with RC boats. Small boats give chase to the geese in the water, just like our dogs give chase to the geese on land. The combination of both tactics is hugely effective.
- Other deterrents such as coyote decoys, seeing-eye balls, fake owls and fake swans have limited effect. They will work initially, but the geese get use to them. Moving them around regularly is key, and if you use these in combination with other tactics it will be more effective.
Step 3: Egg depredation
- In spring when you are implementing your harassment program, a concurrent egg depredation program will reduce the number of geese on your property over the long term. It will also decrease the safety hazards that nesting geese pose to the public. Ohio Geese Control will implement the proper protocols with federal permits that are necessary when providing egg depredation services.
