Geese in cold, winter months

Does a warm winter keep geese here longer?

Geese in cold, winter months Geese will go (or stay) wherever there is access to food and water. In winter weather they can forage through the snow to access the grass for food. But if the water is frozen over, they will migrate to another location. So the warmer weather will definitely keep the water from freezing and keep the geese here for a longer period of time.  Geese are pretty hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -40 degrees F. Their feathers are great insulators.

If you live near a lake or river that continues to flow through the winter months, you may have geese year-round. If geese are planning to migrate, they may be waiting for that strong northern wind to help conserve their energy on that long flight.
