Protect yourself and your pets from bird flu
When avian flu appears in new places, it’s big news. Here are some resources to help you cut through the chatter:
- Your County Health Department
- Ohio Dept Of Natural Resources
- US Department of Agriculture
Each organization has response teams dedicated to tracking this pathogen and informing people about the latest local developments.
Steps you can take
WHEN VISITING A PARK
- Keep pets away from dead birds and bird droppings
- Wash your hands frequently when spending time near wild birds
- Sanitize pet supplies (like toys and leashes) and wash paws after visiting parks where birds are gathered
- Sanitize your shoes if you have been in an area with excessive droppings
- Don’t feed wild birds
FOR YOUR PROPERTY
- Do not let geese congregate on your property.
Birds can spread diseases more quickly when they are in close proximity. Limit the risk by starting a goose control program that includes harassment techniques. - Alert people who use the property to stay away for sick or dead geese
- Report dead geese or birds to 1-800-WILDLIFE
